Acute Care Surgery

Cholecystectomy:

A cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder. The three basic types of this procedure are open cholecystectomy, the laparoscopic and robotic approaches. It is estimated that the laparoscopic procedure is currently used for approximately 80% of cases. Among other benefits, the robotic approach leaves virtually no scar.

Appendectomy:

Removal by surgery of the appendix, the small worm-like appendage of the colon (the large bowel). An appendectomy is performed because of probable appendicitis, inflammation of the wall of the appendix generally associated with infection. There are several approaches to appendectomy. Among them are are open, and laparoscopic. Please discuss your specific individual options with your surgeon at consultation.

Excision of Tumors, Cysts, Lesions, and Abnormal Structures:

The bowel is then reconnected or attached to an opening of the bowel (ostomy), created on the abdominal wall to allow the contents of the bowel to exit from the body. Colectomy may be needed for treatment of diverticulitis, benign polyps of the colon, and cancer of the colon.
